List: 20 Favourite Movies Of 2011 (Part 1)

As I wrote in my New Year's Movie Resolutions post, I was holding-off this favourite movies of 2011 list until I catch up on a few films, particularly The Descendants [2011]. Unfortunately, my local Malaysian cinema distributors has pushed back the release date for that movie from the original (and already late) 19th of January to the 16th of February!! These local distributors really are annoying.

Overall, I thought 2011 was decent but not as good as the previous few years. Thankfully though the line-up for this year's movies is very promising, really looking forward to it. Other than The Descendants, films that I wanted to watch but haven't been able to because it isn't/yet to be released here in Malaysia are The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, Hugo, Extremely Loud And Incredibly CloseThe Rum Diary, A Seperation, The Artist, The Iron Lady, Take Shelter, Young AdultLike Crazy and Martha Marcy May Marlene. Its a huge shame as those movie might have made it into this final 20 line-up of mine. Oh, I also just managed to watch at THE VERY LAST MINUTE Project Nim before posting this. In fact, it pushed Bridesmaid out from the final line-up. Listing down as many as 20 movies results in a very long post, so I've decided to split it up into two parts. Part 1 today will be featuring the rankings 20 until 11, while the rest will be featured tomorrow in Part 2.

# Honourable Mentions:

In no particular order: The Ides Of March, The Future, The Adjustment Bureau, Carnage (read full movie review here), Moneyball, and Attack The Block. And with the 11th hour inclusion of Project Nim in the line-up, Bridesmaid will just have to do with a spot here in the Honourable Mentions.

#20 Everything Must Go

Funny-man Will Ferrell shows that Stranger Than Fiction [2006] was no fluke as he once again proves he can take on more dramatic roles.

Selected Quote: "Market research... I'm making it easy for the customer"

#19 Real Steel

Although the film has quite a number of flaws, it succeeds in delivering plenty of fun while at the same time managing to touch our hearts with its story.

Selected Quote: Charlie: "I've got to go" Bailey: "1200 miles for a kiss" Charlie: "Worth It. Worth It"

#18 Another Earth

Although promoted as a science fiction movie, I believe that aspect of the film actually takes a secondary role behind the drama aspect. I'm not complaining though, as the film managed to keep me entertained for its entire hour and a half duration

Selected Quote: "You're up there and I'm up there"

#17 The Lincoln Lawyer

Matthew McConoughey finally gets out of his "chick flick" stereotype role and shows us in this enjoyable courtroom thriller that he can actually act.

Selected Quote: "There's no client as scary as an innocent man"

#16 Source Code

Duncan Jones followed-up his impressive directorial debut Moon [2009] with this solid science-fiction feature. His next movie is definitely well-anticipated.

Selected Quote: Colter: "Christina, what would you do if you knew you had less than a minute to live?" Christina: "I'd make those seconds count" Colter: "I'd kiss you again" Christina: "Again?"

#15 Fast Five

"This is Brazil!!"

When there's nothing special about the plot or acting, a movie better make sure it excels on some other aspects. Fast Five manages to do that as it delivers loads of eye-candy and adrenaline-pumping fun. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is a welcome addition to the best instalment of the franchise so far.

Selected Quote: "Did he smack that ass, or did he grab it?"

#14 Margin Call

Never had I imagined that a subject so boring to me like finance could be turned into a thrilling and compelling movie. The star-studded cast also delivers a staggering performance.

Selected Quote: "There are three ways to make it in this business: be first, be smarter, or cheat"

#13 Crazy, Stupid, Love

"Will you take off your shirt?... Fuck! Seriously? Its like you're Photoshopped!!"

I wrote in my Chick Flick Clichés post that most romantic comedies nowadays are just so damn predictable. Crazy, Stupid, Love not only brakes that mould but also happens to be extremely funny as well.

Selected Quote: Jacob: "Are you the billionaire owner of Apple Computers?" Cal: "No" Jacob: "Oh, OK. In that case you've got no right to wear New Balance sneakers, ever"

#12 Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol

Whenever I want to make the point that action movies actually CAN be smart, funny, cool, and thrilling all at once, I will refer to this fine movie by the great Brad Bird. A perfect example will be the break-in scene at the Kremlin, where doses of comedy and suspense are blended together to precise effect.

Selected Quote: "That's it! Next time, I get to seduce the rich guy"

#11 13 Assassins (Jusan-nin no shikaku)

Everything from the background story to the characters is established early on in the first half of this movie. This is a nice set-up for going into final half of the film where there is nothing but complete and awesome action!

Selected Quote (translated): "No mercy! There is no samurai code or fair play in battle! No sword? Use a stick. No stick? Use a rock. No rock? Play R&B ;P Use your fist and feet! Lose your life, but make the enemy pay!"
