List: 7 Favourite Athletes Turned Actors

I've just noticed, its been more than a month since I've compiled a Favourite List. Seeing that creating lists is what I love to do (just like what John Cushack and Jack Black did in the movie High Fidelity [2000] or what any other average guy loves to do), it is time for me to create a brand new one. But what should be my theme for today? Hmm, one of the many guilty pleasures I have is watching Pro Wrestling and its major event of the year, Wrestlemania 28 is only less than 2 weeks away. The main event will be between two wrestlers whom are also film actors, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and John Cena. I've always loved The Rock and hated Cena, long before this rivalry even started. As for Cena making fun of the The Rock for being in Tooth Fairy [2010], he should really shut up since his film credentials include Fred The Movie [2010]. That's lame multiple a billion right there.

At first I wanted to create a list for Favourite Wrestlers Turned Actors but soon realised that wouldn't be a very good list. So I had to change this into Favourite Athletes Turned Actors instead. Still not a good enough list when you consider the films these guys have been in, but I'm still going forward with this idea because at the moment I don't have an alternative theme on mind. Here we go then:

# Highest Order Of Special Mentions: Chuck Norris

First of all let's make this clear, this is not an honourable mention. This is the Highest Order Of Special Mentions. Chuck Norris deserves to be in a league of his own. Don't believe me? Search the multiple joke websites about him on the Internet such as this one here. Heck, try typing "Where Is Chuck Norris" in Google, scroll down to the suggested completion, select the "I'm feeling lucky" at the right of the suggestion, and read the results. Trust me, you do not want to mess with Chuck Norris!! You have been warned!!

On a serious note, I wanted to list one of my favourite football/soccer players, Eric Cantona on the list but have only seen one of his films, Looking For Eric [2009], which I placed first on my 5 Favourite Football (Soccer) Movies List.

#7 Carl Weathers (American Football)

Sports Career: Brief stint with the Oakland Raiders before playing in the Canadian Football League for the BC Lions.

Two roles stand out for him. First, being Apollo Creed in the Rocky movies and second, playing the role of Dillon in Predator [1987]. Those two roles alone makes him a familiar face to movie lovers especially in the testosterone-filled male demographic.

Selected Movies: Rocky [1976], Rocky 2 [1979], Predator [1987], Happy Gilmore [1996], Little Nicky [2000]

#6 Jason Lee (Skateboarding)

Sports Career: Prominent professional skateboarder in the late 1980s and early 1990s.

Mostly recognised for his role on the TV series, My Name Is Earl [2005-2009] where he was twice nominated for a Golden Globe Award. Some people have suggested that his personal life is kind off wacky. I wonder if that has anything to do with him naming his son Pilot Inspektor or being a member of Scientology?

Selected Movies: The Incredibles [2004], Almost Famous [2000], Chasing Amy [1997], Dogma [1999], Vanilla Sky [2001]

#5 Jason Statham (Diving)

Sports Carreer: Finished 12th at the World Diving Championships in 1992.

Yeah, I know. He's not a very good actor and has probably been in more bad movies than good ones. But he is rather good in his niche. And that happens to be kicking ass!

Selected Movies: The Transporter [2002], Lock, Stock, And Two Smoking Barrels [1998], Snatch [2000], The Italian Job [2003], The Bank Job [2008]

#4 Vinnie Jones (Football/Soccer)

Sports Career: Part of the "Crazy Gang" that won the English FA Cup with Wimbledon FC in 1998.

As someone who'd played a lot of competitive football/soccer during my student days and having a huge passion for the game, I am obviously familiar with Vinnie's sporting career the most. His "hard man" reputation unfortunately has him playing the same basic roles in movies over and over again.

Selected Movies: Lock, Stock, And Two Smoking Barrels [1998], Snatch [2000], The Midnight Meat Train [2008], X-Men: The Last Stand [2006], Swordfish [2001]

#3 Terry Crews (American Football)

Sports Career: He has competed in the NFL for the Los Angeles Rams, San Diego Chargers, and Washington Redskins.

You know a person is an "action star" if he is cast alongside other legends of the genre in The Expendables [2010]. A bonus for Crews compared to other "tough guy" actors is that he can play comedic roles very convincingly. Working to his disadvantage however is that he has never been the leading man in a notable film.

Selected Movies: The Expendables [2010], White Chicks [2004], The Longest Yard [2005], Middle Men [2010], Get Smart [2008]

#2 Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson (Pro Wrestling & American Football)

Sports Career: Brief time in the Canadian Football League with the Calgary Stampeders before becoming a Pro Wrestling legend in the WWE.

Sure, Dwayne has been in quite few disastrous movies (still better than anything John Cena has been in). But he is charismatic and has star quality. To me he was one of the reasons for the revival of the Fast & Furious franchise, make the upcoming G.I Joe movie seem slightly fun (based on the trailer, then again not a hard job because the first film was horrible), and I loved him in The Rundown [2003] as well as his cameo alongside Samuel L. Jackson in The Other Guys [2010]. He is also in the Guinness Book Of Records for having the highest salary as an actor for his first starring role (USD5.5 Million for The Scorpion King [2002] ).

Selected Movies: Fast Five [2011], The Rundown [2003], The Other Guys [2010], Walking Tall [2004], G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation [2012]

#1 Arnold Schwarzenegger (Bodybuilding & Powerlifting)

Sports Career: 4 times bodybuilding Mr. Universe. Yes, he was the BEST IN THE WORLD FOUR TIMES. Also won a few tournaments in Powerlifting.

Say what you want about the former Governor Of California's acting abilities, in terms of making money at the box-office, he was one of the most bankable stars in history. Hugely impressive movie resume you have to say too.

Selected Movies: Terminator 2: Judgement Day [1991], Predator [1997], Total Recall [1990], Commando [1985], Conan The Barbarian [1982]

  1. I never knew that Chuck Norris was an athlete. Others like Arnold and The Rock it's obvious. Now Arnold is in politics, impressive! Very nice list.

  2. Chuck Norris won several titles in Karate. Well, obviously Karate athletes aren't well-known.
